Today, we visited a washing machine repair shop in Diriamba, Carazo. This charming town is just a 20-minute spin cycle away from Managua and is renowned for the Güegüense celebrations in January. At the shop, we met Luis, a kind fellow who fixes washing machines and has a delightful collection of washing machine parts scattered around like a game of hide and seek. We were absolutely spinning with excitement at the sight of all the broken washing machines he had, imagining the possibility of creating a new model for our pedal-powered washing machine using these up-cycled treasures. Previously, we used a couple of barrels—an outer one made of metal and an inner one of plastic. It was a real workout and not as eco-friendly as we wanted. Now, with these broken machines, our new creations will align better with our mission and vision. Plus, we get to support a small business, rescue materials from a landfill fate, and all for a price that won't spin out our wallets! Each broken washing machine is just 300 cordobas, which is less than 10 US dollars! We can't wait to start pedaling our way to new designs with this newfound treasure trove of materials. Stay tuned for our latest creations!
